A schoolboy, who has been unable to play sports, has found the perfect entertainment—snowboarding. Thomas Pettigrew is enjoying himself by performing difficult actions at freestyle events.

The youngster can’t join in PE lessons at school, because he suffers from a rare condition, which means his body dangerously overheats. This makes it difficult for his body to cool down naturally. But the ice-cool temperatures on the mountains mean Thomas can slide down the slopes freely.

His father Richard came up with the idea of taking Thomas snowboarding in March, 2010. Now while other children look forward to playing outside in the sunshine, Thomas is applying his new activity at the SnoZone in Castleford, in temperatures of about -5oC. Mr. Pettigrew said. “When Thomas tries most sports, he has to stop when he gets too hot but that never happens with snowboarding. I was surprised at how good he was when he started. He now goes every week for three or four hours. He’s been so enthusiastic about his snowboarding that he’s even persuaded me to have a go, so we can enjoy it together.”

Thomas’s parents have spent the past 10 years watching the schoolboy for any signs of overheating, only taking him on holiday in the cooler months. “He has no energy and no interest in doing anything if he overheats and we do whatever it takes to cool his temperature, such as putting him in the car with the air conditioner working or running cold baths.”

Aiden Harington, head of the ski school at SnoZone, said, “Snow sports are a great way for anyone to keep fit, but seem to be particularly beneficial to Thomas as he is able to make sure he stays cool. Thomas does very well in snowboarding, and he can now perform plenty of freestyle actions. I’m sure that he will continue to progress in the coming months, and hopefully take part in some of our freestyle events.”

When a dog looks at you with big puppy-dog eyes, it’s hard for you to go away, and you may speak out “Awww” without hesitation. However, there’s a reason why you find a dog’s stare so attractive. That sweet stare actually causes the release of a particular hormone, or chemical messenger in the body. This hormone creates feelings of affection in humans. The same thing happens to dogs when people look back at them. Scientists believe this helps people and their four-legged friends bond, or feel connected. Scientists have wondered what causes dogs to lovingly stare at their owners. To find out, a team of researchers from Azabu University in Japan studied 30 owners and their dogs.

The researchers found that after the pets and their owners spent half an hour together, both showed a rise in oxytocin (催产素). One key role of this hormone in many animals is to promote bonding, like that between a mother and newborn. The increase of oxytocin didn’t happen, though, when scientists repeated the experiment with wolves and the humans who had raised them.

A second experiment also found that if dogs were given oxytocin, they looked at their owners longer. Scientists aren’t sure exactly why, but this reaction occurred only with female dogs. Their owners’ oxytocin levels also rose as a result.

The result of these experiments might help answer an age-old question: How did the fearsome wolf ancestor of modern dogs turn into man’s best friend? Takefumi Kikusui, an animal scientist who worked on the study, thinks that the change happened when dogs first became domestic (驯养的).

According to Kikusui, there may have been a small group of wild dogs that were naturally friendlier. “Humans are very sensitive to eye contact. By using this special communication tool, the dogs are able to win over our hearts. If they are more likely to make eye contact, it would be easier for them to bond with dog owners,” Kikusui said.

46. According to Paragraph1, people say “Awww ” to __________.

A. make the dog stare at them B. express their love for the dogs

C. draw the dogs’ attention away D. warn the dogs not to approach them

47. According to the passage, oxytocin can __________.

A. reduce animals’ pain of giving birth

B. motivate animals’ desires to protect others

C. help animals to develop a better relationship

D. enable animals to survive more easily from dangers

48. We can infer from Paragraph 3 that __________.

A. dogs given oxytocin react differently

B. female dogs are more popular among humans

C. oxytocin helps dogs become man’s best friends

D. wolves are not likely to be friends with humans

49. The underlined words “ the change” in Paragraph 4 refer to that __________.

A. dogs and wolves are best friends B. wolves begin to bond with humans

C. dogs became friends with humans D. dogs were domesticated by humans

50. What’s the purpose of the passage?

A. To call on humans to be friendly to dogs.

B. To give advice on how to get along with dogs.

C. To introduce the evolution process of wild dogs.

D. To explain why humans and dogs are connected.

Even if you are saying and doing the right things at your job and in your personal life, you could be making a bad impression on people with what you don’t say. That’s because many of our reactions to others are based on body language. If your body language is communicating a negative Message, that’s the message you could be sending, regardless of what actual words come out of your mouth.

What are some of the negative messages sent via body language? Things like having arms folded across your chest can show unfriendliness. Lack of eye contact can indicate shiftiness(奸诈). An unsmiling face could communicate a variety of things, like anger, disappointment or sadness, depending upon what other facial expressions are included. However, many of the clues that indicate negativity could also be the result of nervousness or other issues. For example, somebody who doesn’t make eye contact could simply be nervous and less confident. The same goes with a not-so-warm handshake. Someone folding his arms could simply be more comfortable with the arms that way. Someone who doesn’t smile could be self-conscious about her teeth. The person who sends off bad body language may not even realize that they’re doing it.

Unfortunately, some people who do recognize what body language communicates are scam(欺诈) artists. They may have the firmest handshake, the shiniest smile and make the greatest eye contact to convince others of their sincerity, because they know how much this nonverbal communication plays a part in communicating sincerity. Yet people fall for them, because their body language seems sincere.

If you’re not sure what your body language is communicating, ask a trusted friend for help. Practicing in front of a mirror can also help you remove bad habits. Remember to smile and nod if needed. And try to learn how to relax. Thus, you will send more positive messages with your body language.

51. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. A not-so-warm handshake may indicate that one lacks confidence.

B. A tired facial expression can certainly communicate boredom.

C. We should make the greatest eye contact at any time.

D. We can judge a person’s attitude correctly according to his expression.

52. According to the passage, the person who folds his arms __________.

A. will make a bad impression on everyone

B. just wants to be more comfortable with the arms folded

C. must be an aggressive person with a bad temper

D. may not realize what message the arms’ position sends

53. We can learn from the passage that __________.

A. the shiniest smile is always a sign of sincerity

B. people can use body language for wrong purposes

C. sending positive messages through body language is not easy

D. nodding is necessary when it comes to sending positive messages

54. The underlined phrase “fall for” means __________.

A. believe B. forgive C. understand D. reject

55. Which is the best title for this passage?

A. The Secret of Body Language.

B. Facial Expressions and Messages.

I’m not an athlete, but I am a lover of the Olympics. My biggest sports moment ever didn’t require me to be the fastest, the highest, or the strongest. It just required me to be in the right place at the right time, and catch the opportunity when it came to me. It was to carry our national flag for the Olympic Torch Relay.

As a part of the celebration, flag bearers(旗手) were needed. I served in the army at that time and the Olympic organizers asked for volunteers to help carry some of the flags. Although it demanded that I give up part of my weekends and get up early, I thought that it was the chance of a lifetime.

There were several different groups that took part in the event as flag bearers. We soldiers were going to be out in front leading them. On the day of the event, we arrived early at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Many people arrived to see the flame arrive from Greece, and the beginning of the Olympic Torch Relay. It was exciting to wait for our turn to enter the coliseum.

As a flag bearer, I was supposed to run out in front. Though the flag was fairly heavy, I picked it up and ran with it. I ran past rows of people. I ran through television cameras. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life, being able to carry our national flag in an international event like the Olympics. I was very proud of it.

I had never been able to attend the Olympics, and I might never be important enough to carry an Olympic torch or anything like that, but I did get to carry our national flag in the torch relay, although I will no longer have the opportunity to carry the flag in the Olympics, and that would be one sports experience that would be difficult to forget.

In order to make her 45th birthday impressive, I intend to buy her a wonderful present, one that is not expensive but very meaningful, so a new pair of sunglasses will be a good choice to protect her from strong sunlight in summer. What’s more, I, with my father, will do the housework as well as cooking a big dinner to give her a big surprise.

Our parents always do whatever they can to love and support us and it’s our turn to repay their selfless care and love now.
