One day, I heard an American boy say to a Chinese girl student, “ You speak very good English.” But the girl answered, “ No, no. My English is very poor.” The foreigner was quite 35at the answer. Thinking he had not made 36understood or the girl had not heard him clearly, he said ,“ Yes , indeed, you speak very well.”but the girl still kept saying , “ No.” In the end the American boy could not understand and didn’t know 37 to say.

What’s wrong with the girl’s answer? She didn’t 38 a compliment (恭维)in the same way as the American people do . She should39 ,“ Thank you”instead of“ No” . She really understood what the American boy had said, but she thought she should be modest. In the west, people will feel proud and 40 when they are praised . So if someone says the 41 you have cooked are very delicious , you should say , “ Thank you .”

In our country, we think being modest is a virtue and being proud is a bad thing , but in my opinion , being confident does not 42 being proud , so sometimes you should be confident 43 being modest.

44 you are modest and say ,“No , I’m afraid I can’t do it well” , while working in a western country , the others may think that you really cannot do it . If you often say “No” , you will cer tainly be looked down upon by 45 . When asking for a job , if one says something like “Yes , I can certainly do it ” instead of “ Let me have a try ” , he or she will 46 get it . So in the west , you should be brave to show your self-confidence.

Are you carrying too much on your back at school? I’m sure lots of children of your age will say “yes”. Not only the students in China have this problem, but children in the United States also have heavy school bags.

Doctors are starting to worry that younger and younger students are having back and neck problems as a result of school bags being too heavy for them.

“It’s hard for me to go upstairs with my bag because it’s so heavy,’said Rick Hammond, an 11-year-old student in the US.

Rick is among students who have common school bags with two straps to carry them, but many other students choose rolling bags.

But even with rolling bags, getting up stairs and buses is still a problem for children. Many of them have hurt their backs and necks because of the heavy school bags.

But how much is too much? Doctors say students should carry no more than 10% to 15% of their own body weight.

Scott Butch, a back doctor, said children under Grade 4 should stay with 10%, but it is also important that older children don’t stay with over 15%, because their bodies are still growing. “Children are losing their balance and falling down with their school bags,:” he said.

Parents and teachers are starting to tell children to only take home library books they will be reading that night. Some teachers are using pieces of paper or thin work books for students to take home.

One of the best answers is, as some children said, to have no homework at all!

53. From the passage we can know that__________.

A. only children in China carry too heavy school bags

54. If a child carries a heavy school bag, his___________ will be hurt.

A. hands B. feet C. back and neck D. head and arms

55. According to the doctor, Scott Butch, if a child in Grade 5 weighs about30 kilos, the school bag he carries should not be over________ kilos

A. 3 B. 4.5 C.5 D. 5.5

A new study suggests that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop depression as young adults.

The researchers used a national long-term survey of healthy young teenagers of about 13-16 to find out the relationship between media use and depression. They based their findings on more than4000 young teenagers who were not depressed when the survey began in 1995.

As part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they watched da ily. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio.

Here was the result. The young people spent five and a half hours a day using media and more than 2 hours of that was spent watching TV.

Seven years later, in 2001, more than 7% of the young people had signs of depression. The average age at that time was 21. Brian Primack at the University of Pittsburgh medical school was the lead authorof the new study. He says every extra hour of television meant an 8% increase in the chances of developingsigns of depression.

The researchers say they did not find any such relationship with the use of othermedia such as movies, video games or radio. But the study did find that young men were more likely than young women to developdepression given the same amount of media use.

Doctor Primack says the study did not find out if watching TV causes depression directly. But one possibility, he says, is that it may take time away from activities that could help prevent depression, like sports and social activities. It might also prevent a person from sleeping well, he says, and that could have an influence.

The study was just published in the Archives of General Psychiatry.

In December, the journal Social Indicators Research published a study of activities that help lead to happylives. Researchers from the University of Maryland found that people who describe themselves as happy spend less time watching television than unhappy people. The study found that happy people are more likely to be socially active, to read, attend social services and to vote.

57. What does the word “depression”mean? It’s a kind of _____.

B. study C. sportsD. disease

58. In 2001, more than ______ young people in the research had got the signs of depression.

A. 7 B. 21 C. 280 D. 4000

59. What does the writer want to tell us?

A. Thescientific research can prevent people from having depression.

B. People are sure to benefit from watching TV less while taking activities more.

C. Giving up all the uses of media and this will make you become a healthy person.

D. The researchers will stop the study as it’s too difficult to understand the relationship between media use and depression

八、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共10分,每小题2分)

In the past, man did not have to think about the protection of his environment. There were not many people on the earth, and natural resources seemed to be unlimited .

Today, things are different. The world has become too crowded. We are using up our natural resources too quickly, and at the same time we are polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals. If we continue like this, human life on earth will not survive.

Everyone realizes today that if too many fish are taken from the sea, there will soon be none left. Yet with modern fishing methods, more and more fish are caught. We know that if too many trees are cut down, forests will disappear and nothing will grow on the land. Yet, we continue to use bigger and more powerful machines to cut down more and more trees.

We realize that if rivers are polluted with waste products from factories, we will die. However, in most countries waste products are still put into rivers or into the sea, and there are few laws to stop this.

We know, too, that if the population of the world continues to rise at the present rate, in a few years, there wi ll not be enough food.

If we eat more vegetables and less meat, we will easily get more food. Land that is used to grow crops can feed five times more people than land where animals are kept.

The world population will not rise so quickly if people use modern methods of birth control.

Finally, if we educate people to think about the problems, we shall have a better and cleaner living place in the future.

64. Is the number of people in the world just the same as it was in the past?

65. Are the natural resources on the earth limited or unlimited?

66. Why do we have fewer and fewer fish and trees now?

67. What is the writer’s advice on eating?

68. What must we do to make our human beings live happily on the earth?
