The Clever Way to Get Rich致富妙法

There lived a rich man named Guo in the State of Qi and a poor man named Xiang in the State of Song.

The poor man came to the State of Qi to visit the rich man, and asked him about the way to get rich.

The rich man in the State of Qi told him:

"I was also very poor before, but now I am quite well-off. The only reason is that I can steal and rob. But it is very painstaking. By stealing and robbing, I could make a living in the first year, and in the second year I had more than enough to eat and wear. In the third year, my family's storehouse was truly filled with grain and millet."

The man of Song only heard him talk profusely about stealing and robbing, but did not find out clearly how to steal and rob. The minute he returned home, he got dizzy with imagined success and started to steal and rob.

As soon as it was dark, he climbed over the wall of the family on the east, and dug a hole in the wall of the family on the west. He stole whatever he saw. After some time, his family actually began getting rich. But just when he was immensely proud of himself, the bailiffs from the yamen (government office) came and arrested him. He was declared guilty and put in prison. All the things he had stolen and robbed, together with his own old and worn-out stuff, were confiscated.

As soon as the thief was released upon completion of his prison term, he went to Guo's home in the State of Qi to blame him. The rich man asked him in haste:

"How are you doing?"

The thief told him what had happened and sighed:

"I am now even poorer than before."

The rich man was astonished at first, then said regretfully:

"How can you be in reduced circumstances? Alas, you completely misunderstood what I meant by stealing and robbing."

He continued:

又说:

"By stealing and robbing, I meant seeking for the resources of the earth, and racing against the seasons of the heavens. Dense forests, broad land, sunshine, rain and dew, wind and cloud, all these are my targets for robbing. I approach them, make friends with them, and rely on them to plant crops and build houses. Birds in the sky, beasts on land, fish and shrimp in the river…all these don't belong to me by nature. But I, fearing neither hardship nor toil, use my brains and think up ways to steal them and rob them. This is stealing and robbing in an open and aboveboard way. It is by no means committing a crime. As to the clothing, food and articles of individuals, they are obtained through people's own labour, and can only belong to these people. I have never encouraged you to steal and rob other people's private property. But you have actually done so, which does break the law. Who is to blame for your being found guilty and put in prison?"

Yang Zhu had a younger brother named Yang Bu.

One day, Yang Bu went to the market in a white suit. On his way it suddenly rained, and he got wet all over. He took off his white suit, went to a friend's home to borrow a black suit and went home in it.

The minute Yang Bu approached the gate of his house, the big dog he reared couldn't recognize him as its own master. Taking him for a stranger, it pounced upon him at once, opening its mouth, showing its teeth, and barking furiously.

This made Yang Bu lose his temper. He cursed:

"You beast! Can't you even recognize me?"

While cursing, he picked up a wooden stick and chased the dog to beat it.

Gan Ying was a crack shot in ancient times. Once he pulled his bow, the animals he shot at would fall and the birds he shot at would drop. He hit the target with every shot. His disciple, named Fei Wei, learned diligently and practised hard, and surpassed his teacher in archery.

A man named Ji Chang came to Fei Wei to learn archery. Fei Wei said to Ji Chang:

"You must first train your eyes not to blink. Then I can talk with you about archery."

Ji Chang returned home. Following Fei Wei's instructions, he lay face up under his wife's loom, with his eyes fixed on the foot tweezers moving up and down.

After training in this way for two years, his eyes would not blink even when an awl was flying towards them. Ji Chang gladly reported the result of his training to Fei Wei.

Fei Wei said:

"This is not enough. You must train your eyesight, then we can talk about archery. You must train till you can magnify small things into big ones, and see minute things distinctly."

Ji Chang returned home and hung a louse on the window with an ox tailhair. Every day he faced south and stared at it with fixed concentration. Over 10 days later, he felt that the louse was becoming bigger. After 3 years, it looked as big as a carriage wheel. Then he looked at other things and they became as big as small hills in his eyes.

Thereupon, he took an arrow and shot at the louse. He hit the center of the louse with one single shot, while the ox tailhair was untouched and still hanging on the window.

Ji Chang ran to tell this to Fei Wei. Fei Wei gladly patted him on the chest and said:

"You have really mastered the skill of archery."

Xue Tan learned for a certain period of time, but before he had mastered the skill of his teacher, he thought that he had learned all.

One day, Xue Tan planned to leave his teacher for home. His teacher knew he was leaving and did not urge him to stay.

The day Xue Tan said goodbye to his teacher and set out for home, Qin Qing accompanied him on his way and gave him an especial farewell dinner outside the city. During the dinner, Qin Qing beat time and sang a solemn and stirring song. His resounding voice shook the trees along the road; his beautiful singing kept the clouds lingering in the sky.

Xue Tan heard the singing and felt ashamed of himself. He hurriedly knelt down before his teacher and apologized:

"Master, after I heard you sing, I can find no place to hide myself for shame. I am ashamed beyond words. I am far from mastering your skill."

He asked his teacher to forgive him and allow him to stay and resume his learning. From then on, he learned humbly and dared not ask to go home. Later, he said to everyone he met:

"To learn a skill, how can one be conceited and learn only half-baked knowledge?"

Two Children Argue About the Sun小儿辩日

Once, Confucius went to the east to advocate his ideas, On the way he met two children arguing hotly with each other. Confucius asked:

"Children, what are you arguing about?"

One child said:

"I think when the sun rises from the hills, it is nearer to us, and at noon, it is farther from us."

The other child argued:

"I think when the sun rises from the hills, it is farther from us, but at noon it is nearer to us."

One child said:

"As is known to all, things far away look smaller and things nearer look bigger. When the sun rises, it is as big as the canopy on a carnage; at noon it is only as big as a plate or a dish. Doesn't this show that when the sun rises, it is nearer to us?"

The other child said:

"We all know that things nearby make us feel hot, and things far away make us feel cool. When the sun comes out, the air is clear and clean; at noon it is as hot as putting the hand in hot water. Doesn't this show that the sun is nearer to us at noon?"

The two children went on arguing endlessly. Confucius was unable to judge who was right. The two children laughed at him:

"Who said you are learned and erudite?"
