Taking Chencang by Using a Clever Strategy

This is a story from the novel Three Kingdoms. Zhuge Liang led 300，000 Shu State troopsin a march towards Chencang， the vital communication stronghold of the Wei State. It washis second expedition against the Wei State. Hao Zhao， the general guarding the city dug thetrenches deep and built the fortress strong. He waited for the attack. Everyday， Zhuge Liangsent soldiers to challenge the Wei army in battle， but the Wei troops held fast to theirposition and refused to come out. One day， a scout came back to report that Hao Zhao wasseriously ill. Zhuge Liang thought that the chance had come at last. He ordered Wei Yan andJiang Wei to take 5，000troops and surround Chencang in three days. They were to attack thecity when they saw a fire inside the city. After that， he gave Guan Xing and Zhang Bao secretinstructions. As the health of the Wei State general Hao Zhao was deteriorating， suddenly itwas reported to Hao Zhao that the troops from Shu State had arrived outside the city. HaoZhao hurriedly ordered officers and soldiers to defend the city in their position. Unexpectedly，a fire broke out on each of the city's towers. There was chaos inside the city. Hao Zhaowasfrightened to death. The troops of the Shu State smashed all enemy resistance andadvanced into the city. Three days later when Wei Yan and Jiang Wei led their troops to thegate of the city， they heard somebody shouting from the top of the city wall， “You have cometoo late!” The two generals fixed their eyes upon the person. It was the Prime Minister of theShu State， Zhuge Liang. The two generals got down from their horses hastily and e Liang said， “The reason that I asked you to attack the city in three days is to keep thedoldiers calm. In fact， Ihad already sent Guan Xing and Zhang Bao to secretly leave the centerarea of Han the same night as I ordered you. By disguising myself， I hid among the soldiersand set out for Chencang by starlight. We gave the enemy a surprise attack. The fire was seton at my instruction and it threw the city into confusion. This is called “taking the enemy bysurprise and striking when it is unprepared.”

诸葛亮带领三十万大军再度伐魏，直奔交通要塞陈仓而来。守将郝昭在这里挖深沟筑堡垒，以守待攻。诸葛亮每天派人叫阵，魏军坚守不出。有一天，派出去的探子回来报告，说陈仓守将郝昭病重。诸葛亮觉得时机已到，马上叫魏延、姜维三天之后带五千人马围住陈仓，待见到城中起火，协同攻城。然后又唤关兴、张苞附耳暗授机密。魏将郝照病势严重，忽然接到报告，说蜀军已到城下，急命将士上城把守。此时各城楼突然大火四起，城中顿时大乱。郝照当即吓死。蜀兵势如破竹，直入城中。三天后，魏延、姜维领兵来到陈仓城下，见城上有人大喊：“你二位来迟了!”二人定眼一看，不是别人，正是丞相诸葛亮。二人急忙下马行礼。诸葛亮说：“我叫你二人三天后领兵攻城。是为了稳住军心，其实我已叫关兴、张苞连夜暗出汉中，我化装藏在军中，星夜赶奔陈仓，让敌人一点准备都没有。那些城内放火的人是我早就安排好的。一着火，城内必然不战自乱，这叫出其不意，攻其不备.”

Zhang Fei's Apology

At Cao Cao's instruction， Liu Bei was about to set off for a punitive expedition againstYuan Shu. Before he left， Liu Bei worried about the defence of Xuzhou City. When Zhang Feivolünteered to take the task， Liu said， “How can I feel assured， when you're so fond ofdrinking and after drinking you always flog your soldiers for no reason? And you're such a hot-tempered person and frequently you refuse to take advice.” He entrusted the task upon Zhangonly after the latter's repeated entreatments and resolütions to mend his ways. For safety， heleft consultant Chen Deng to assist Zhang . One day Zhang invited his subordinate officersover. “My elder brother instructed me before he left to stay away from wine for fear I may failmy duties to guard the city. Let's have an final drinking party today， and starting fromtomorrow， we will quit drinking and concentrate on the job .” With these words said， hebegan toasting everyone. When neither of his toasts was accepted by Cao Bao， Zhang flaredup ， By then ， Zhang was already drunk. He had Cao flogged fifty times. After the party wasover， the resentful Cao sent one of his men to Lü Bu， the enemy general， asking him toattack the city that night while Zhang was drunk. Lü came with 500 horsemen. Theysuccessfully took the city. When Zhang woke up with a start， the city was gone. He fought hisway out of the enemy troops and fled the city， leaving his elder brother's family behind. Whenhe met Liu， he felt so shame-faced that he unsheathed his sword meaning to commitsuicide， only to be stopped by his elder brother.

吕布当夜领五百轻骑取得徐州。呐喊声震醒张飞，知徐州已失，顾不得刘备的家眷，边战边逃。后张飞见到刘备，悔恨万分，欲抽剑自刎，被刘备死死拦住。

Zhao Yun Saves Young Master Single-Handedly

Though Liu Bei was outnumbered by Cao Cao's troops in the Xinye battle， Liu defeatedCao thanks to the smart tactic he had resorted to. Cao soon commanded an army of 500，000 to take his revenge. When Liu Bei and his force of 3，000 got to Dangyang County， theywere stopped by Cao's troops. A bitter fight lasted until dawn and the Liu army narrowlymanaged to eLüde the chasing enemy.

As day broke， General Zhao Yun discovered that Liu Bei's wife and son were missing. Zhaogathered 30 troops and fought his way back onto the battlefield to look for Liu's wife， MadamMi， and son， A Dou. With the help of a middle-aged woman， Zhao Yun found Madam Mi andA Dou by the side of a dry well behind a collapsed wall. Madam Mi said： “A Dou is safe now withyou， General. I'd rather die than encumber you.” When Zhao Yun was not looking her way，Madam Mi threw herself into the well. Suddenly， Cao troops came charging toward Zhao tears in his eyes， Zhao Yun pushed down what remained of the collapsed wall to coverthe dry well. He then held A Dou against his chest and rode his horse onward as he fought offattackers. It took Zhao Yun three rounds of combat to fight off the chasing enemy. At onepoint Zhao was engaged by General Zhang He and a unit of Cao's troops. Zhao and Zhangfought a dozen rounds and Zhao tried to break the siege. But Zhao Yun and his horseunexpectedly fell into a trap. Just as Zhang He charged to pierce Zhao Yun with his spear，Zhao's horse leapt out of the trap. Zhang He was taken aback by the sudden move and hishorse backed off several gaits. Zhao Yun fought Cao's generals and troops single-handedly. Noone could get close to him. Cao Cao， who was watching the battle from a nearby hilltop，ordered that Zhao Yun be captured alive. Zhao Yun made the most of Cao's no-kill order andbroke through the siege in the end. When he returned to his camp， Zhao Yun handed theyoung master to Liu Bei.

新野一战，刘备以少胜多打败曹操，曹操引五十万大宫前来报仇。刘备的三千人马走到当阳县，突然被曹兵截住，战到天明才摆脱曹兵的追赶，护卫刘备家小的赵云发现不见了刘备，走散了糜夫人母子，急集合三十骑，又杀回乱军中寻找。赵云在一位大嫂的指引下，在一截断墙后面的枯井旁找到糜夫人母子。糜夫人说：“见到将军阿斗有救了，……我死而无恨!”说完，趁赵云不注意跳井身亡。这时曹兵向这边杀来，赵云含泪推倒土墙埋了夫人，急忙抱起阿斗往外冲。曹将杀来，战三回合，被赵云杀死。没走多远，又碰上曹将张镉，战十余回合，赵云夺路而走，不料连人带马落入陷井。张镉挺枪来刺，忽然赵云的马平空一路，跳出陷井，张镉吓得一个劲后退。赵云力战众将，威武勇猛。正在山上观战的曹操见赵云势不可挡，传令一定要活捉。赵云利用这个机会冲出包围，终于将阿斗交给了刘备。
