Honesty is regarded as a virtue by most, if not all, of the world’scultures and religions. Many of us, if asked to enumerate the qualities we seekin a friend or a partner, would place honesty at the top of the list. Inreality, many people seem to think that being honest is for others and not forthemselves. However, I believe that, given the negative consequences of lyingand deception, practicing honesty is in our own best interest.

For one thing, being dishonest can have serious side-effects on our mentalhealth. Dishonest people even if they have not yet been “found out”, are likelyto carry guilt and shame inside them. This is because, although lying is animmoral, most liars still have a conscience deep down inside. For another thing, those who misleads or lie to others are bound to be caught sooner or ed, people may get away with lying once or even several times. However, theone time that they get caught could entail great loss, or even spell theirdownfall. Depending on the nature of deception, having one’s lies could meanlosing one’s job, being deserted by friends and family, or even spending time injail.

Generally speaking, while it may be impossible to eliminate the deceit thatexists around us, each of us can decide whether, and to what extent, to practicetruthfulness ourselves. Considering the adverse influence that lying can have——including destroying our mental heath and , ultimately, causing us to suffergreat loss—— it is apparent that honesty is our only viable option.

Intelligence-Nature or Nurture?

Nowadays, there is no agreement among people concerning intelligence. Somepeople contend that intelligence is to some extent something we are born the closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they arelikely to be in intelligence.

However, others maintain that environment plays a crucial role in ourintelligence. For instance, if we put two identical twins in differentenvironments, we might send one to university and the other to a factory wherethe job is boring, we would find differences in their intelligence several yearslater.

Just as every coin has two sides, our intelligence is partly born andpartly developed. The sure way to develop our intelligence is intelligentparents as well as a good environment.

Some people think governments should spend as much money as possibleexploring outer space (for example, traveling to the Moon and other planets)r people disagree ant think governments should spend this money for ourbasic needs on Earth. Which of these two opinions do you agree with? Usespecific reasons and details to support your answer.

Even people born after 1968 can easily name the first man to land on themoon; we have all seen the black and white footage of Neil Armstrong in a spacesuit taking slow, bounding steps to plant an American flag on the moon’ssurface. Now, forty years later, some might suggest that governments shouldcontinue exploring outer space, and should even devote a healthy amount of moneyfrom their budgets to this end. However, the needs of our world have changed, and we must prioritize our spending accordingly and allocate our financialresources to helping the Earth itself.

When we consider the exploration of outer space that had its heyday in the1950’s and 1960’s, we must also consider the political factors that were presenthere on Earth. During the Cold War, countries like the United States and theSoviet Union were interested in displaying their intellectual, scientific andfinancial resources, and outer space became the arena in which this took ‘‘Space Race’’ culminated in 1968 when the United States landed the firstastronauts on the moon. Space exploration was of the extreme interest toordinary citizens, but was connected to themes of national strength andpatriotism.

Now, as we consider whether to continue the exploration of outer space, ourworld is faced with a different set of circumstances. Governments are lesspreoccupied with their standing in the world, and more interested in thewell-being of those who live in it. The greatest threat to our well-being is ourdamaged environment, and this is a concern of the entire world. For example, pollution caused by factories in South America might contribute to rising waterlevels in Bangladesh. Space exploration would require a great outlay of money onequipment, personnel and fuel; instead we must allot our financial resourcestoward cooperating with other countries to improve the environment and help makelife more bearable for our fellow citizens on earth.

In summary, those who were alive during the Age of Exploration of the1950’s and 1960’s can remember the excitement of that era; the scientificfindings of those missions to outer space have provided precious insights intothe universe beyond Earth. However, one of the goals of governments pursuingspace exploration was to provide a show of strength for their countries. Now,the best way a government can show its strength is to show that it cares for itsfellow citizens around the world.
