A Song in Slow Time

Green the mallow in the garden,

Waiting for sunlight to dry the morning dew;

Bright spring diffuses virtue,

Adding fresh luster to all living things.

Yet I dread the coming of autumn

When leaves turn yellow and the flowers fade.

A hundred streams flow eastwards to the ocean,

Nevermore to turn west again;

And one who mis-spends his youth

In old age will grieve in vain.

Far from Home

I sing a song of grief instead of weeping,

Stare into the distance instead of going home,

And dream of my native village,

My heart full to bursting.

I would go back but have no one to help me,

I would cross the river but there is no boat;

No words can tell my longing,

It seems as if wheels were grinding over my heart!

A Pledge

By heaven,

I shall love you

To the end of time!

Till mountains crumble,

Streams run dry,

Thunder rumbles in winter,

Snow falls in summer,

And the earth mingles with the sky —

Not till then will I cease to love you!

To a Faithless Husband

Plain as snow on the hill,

Clear as moon among the clouds.

Is your change of heart, they tell me;

And so I've come to bid you good-bye.

Today we've drunk a measure of wine,

Tomorrow we must part by the canal.

I shall walk beside the royal canal,

Whose waters flow east and are gone,

And wonder if my grief will ever end.

No girl need cry when she's married.

If her husband is a single-hearted man

Who will not leave her till her hair is white.

Pliant the bamboo fishing rod,

Wet, wet, the tail of the fish.

A man who valued constancy

Would set no store by money!

By the Roadside Mulberry

The morning sunlight

Shines on the Qin mansion

Whose pride is the lady,

The lady Luofu.

For the silkworms she tendeth

She strippeth th mulberries

Which grow to the south;

From the cassia her basket

Hangs by a silk ribbon.

She has hair neatly braided,

Pearl earrings like moonbeams,

Silk petticoat yellow

And apron of purple.

When a wayfarer sees her

He sets down his burden

A while, strokes his beard.

A youth when he sees her

Doffs cap and salutes.

The ploughman leaves ploughing,

The hoer his hoeing,

And back in their houses

Find fault with their wives,

Having gazed on Luofu.

From the south comes a lording

In carriage with five horses;

Surprised, halts and sends one

To make an inquiry,

"Who is that beauty,

And who are her kin?"

"She is one of the Qins,

And her name is Luofu."

"And what may her age be?"

"Her summers not twenty,

Yet more than fifteen."

Then he, condescending,

Says, "Luofu, will't please you

To enter my carriage?"

She faces him boldly,

And thus makes reply:

"What nonsense you talk, sir!

You have your own wife,

And I my own husband.

From the east ride a thousand

With him at their head.

And how shall you know him?

By the white horse he rides,

By the black colt that follows,

Their silk-braided tails

And their gold-braided halters;

By the sword at his side,

With its hilt of jade fashioned,

For which he paid millions.

At the age of fifteen

He kept prefecture minutes,

A scribe in his twenties,

At thirty a minister;

Now, being forty,

He governs a district.

His skin is so fair

And he wears a long beard.

He moves in the yamen

With step slow and stately;

He sits among thousands

Who own him their best."
